Tribal influences
It’s time to go native. If you’re wondering what that means, just take a look at Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the mega sci-fi movie Endhiran. The actress sports a bold, yet glam look, inspired by tribal influences. This is the look that’s the forerunner of the hottest new trend — the tribal phenomenon.
“This kind of look lays a lot of emphasis on eye make-up. The eyes are very bold and usually stick to a palette of either midnight blue or black. Both the upper and lower eyelids are heavily lined. Use kohl to get an authentic effect and smudge it with eye shadow later on. Leave out the colours for the eyes in this look,” advises Nirja Watvani, a make-up artiste and freelance consultant.
“Go in for perfect, doe-shaped almond eyes that really stand out. To master this look, you need to work on your eyes and even though it’s time consuming, you will find it is well worth the effort. Don’t forget to top it off with loads of mascara or use fake lashes if you have to,” she adds.
While the skin in this look is flawless, experts say that it’s not pale. Tribals spend a lot of time outdoors, so their skin gets bronzed in the sun. To get a similar effect you can use a liquid foundation and follow this up with a bronzer, but be careful not to overdo the bronzer, otherwise you may stand out like a sore thumb!
“Make-up must blend well with your skin to get that flawless, even effect,” says Priya Kasibhatla, a make-up consultant. The blusher is not used in this look, she points out. For the lips, stick to a matte colour, preferably something that’s in between orange and coral. “These hues also complement the Indian skin tone. Otherwise you can go in for a shade that’s closer to red if you want to play safe. Skip the lip gloss,” advises Priya.
The hair is another high point of this style. “Think foxy, messy styles. Do up your hair in loose curls or natural waves and tousle them with your fingertips to get the right effect. For a quick fix, you can braid your hair when it’s damp and undo the braid in 10 minutes and blow dry. This gives natural looking waves,” explains Nirja, who says that since a lot of effort goes into this look, it’s advisable to use some finishing spray or translucent powder that will hold everything together. Your clothes too need to be in sync. “When it comes to your outfits, stick to earthy colours with bold, big prints. Don’t go in for pastels or whites and yes, bring out all the beads for a truly tribal look,” she says.
