Twelve-year-old Durga charms industry

Little Durga is the voice behind popular track Chi Cha Leather in Gangs of Wasseypur 2

When little Durga made her way into the trains of Wasseypur begging for alms, little did she know that she was actually embarking on a journey to stardom. The 12-year-old who sang Chi Cha Leather, a song from Gangs of Wasseypur 2, has already won fans and her rustic charm and innocence seem to have tugged at many hearts already. But the young celebrity is in no mood to pander to the media.

Durga, who is being chased by most entertainment journalists, has chosen to stay away from the limelight. She has refused to accept a cellphone or even disclose her residential address. Thus the process of getting in touch with her, even for Anurag Kashyap and Sneha Khanwalar (composer) is a tedious one with one of them having to get in touch with a vendor on the train, who will in turn establish contact with Durga. The process apparently takes anywhere between two days to a week. Anurag has been getting constant calls from the media for an interview with Durga, but there’s little the director can do.
Talking about her newfound protégée, Sneha Khanwalkar says, “I was amazed when I heard Durga singing. Had I just heard her voice and not seen her, I would have never guessed that she is all of 12 years old. The power she has in her vocals at such a young age is outstanding. Durga is a gifted singer and very hard-working as well. We are lucky to have found her.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
