Uniforms don’t impress

The hot shot Navy jet pilot Tom Cruise who made hearts race many decades ago, still has that hold on us. Top Gun not only made him famous but the hordes of uniformed men after him knew they had a shot at fame. Shahid Kapoor may just manage to recreate that — wear a uniform and take to the skies — in Mausam. Amitabh Bachchan in Zanjeer is an unforgettable memory. There is definitely something about a man in uniform. But do the officers still charm the ladies or is it an outdated notion?
Model and Mr International winner Bassam Mallick believes women look for that security in a man. “Whether it’s traditional women or modern women, they still look up to a man with lots of hope and security. A man in uniform they feel, can save them from any incident and come out as a hero.”
A man in a uniform also knows how to look after himself — polished, shiny shoes, neat hair and facial hair. For most women that is a winner. But ace designer Narender Kumar feels the notion doesn’t hold the same significance any more. “We are no longer conquerers waging a valiant war,” he says adding, “The only war we are fighting is that on the stock market and the traffic on the streets!”
Every uniform has its own place in a woman’s heart. A businessman portrays himself as powerful and wealthy, while the military, someone commanding and in control. “It depends on the uniform,” says comedian Anuvab Pal adding in jest, “If you wear a Godrej Pest Control uniform, it doesn’t have the same effect!”
There are definitely new heroes (think Anna Hazare) around. Considering the ‘fighter’ is not always the most attractive for some. Narendra adds, “The military is not sexy any more. That only happened in the times of Mills & Boons!”
Well so much for that knight in shining armour then. Ladies, what say?

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
