While funny things happen around us all the time, it’s a comedian’s job to highlight the madness around us, feels
New York-based comedian and writer Radhika, who is coming to the city with her popular show Unladylike: The Pitfalls of Propriety.

“We live in a crazy world. There is always someone doing or saying something ridiculous, including me. I could not help noticing the hilarious contradictions in our thoughts and actions. And this included the ladylike mannerisms that we women are expected to adopt. This is what led to me becoming unladylike,” says Radhika, who has set New Yorkers laughing with her comedy acts.
Radhika, who gave up a career in advertising and took to the stage with her talent for wit, insists that being a female comedian is just like any other job. “I think I ended up being a comedian by being rubbish at everything else. Sometimes you find your true calling by a process of elimination,” she adds.
She says she has not seen many Indian comedy shows and Aditi Mittal and Papa CJ are the two comedians she finds funny. As she is gearing up for her one-woman show at Epicentre tomorrow, Radhika is excited about visiting the capital.
“My in-laws live in Gurgaon so that brings me to Delhi quite often. I have already seen Chandni Chowk, which I thought was fascinating. But it was on a shoot for a show and while I got a sense of the place, I didn’t get to ‘loaf’ around as much as I would have liked to. Chandni Chowk is a place I would like to explore under less rushed circumstances,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
