The vastu behind staircases
Stairways, or staircases, are crucial components of the house. They connect floors, allow for some space and a really good design can leave guests in awe. But they have to be laid out carefully, and if you believe in vastu, here are some pointers to watch out for:
Time for some mathematics
Aim for an odd number of stairs. The number of risings should be planned so that, if divided by three, the remainder is always 2.
Paint the stairway a light colour
Avoid spraying them with red or black. Makes sense, because if the lights go out, you don’t want to be climbing a black-painted stairway.
Repair damaged stairs immediately. Chipped risings can cause tensions within the family and yes, injuries.
Ideal directions to build a staircase are towards the southern or western part of the house. Never build a room under a stairway, especially religious spaces (puja rooms). You could always use the space under one for storage. Don’t use a common stairway to connect the top floor and the basement.
