Veena falls for a risqué character
Now that she is gearing up for the release of her first Bollywood project, controversies’ darling Veena Malik is all set to take criticism head on. Talking on the sideline of her movie Zindagi 50-50, the Pakistani actress says she believes in portraying characters convincingly and is willing to go to any length to do that.
“This is my first Bollywood film set for release, and it goes without saying that I have butterflies in my stomach. It is my hard work of a year,” says Veena who is essaying the character of Madhuri, a streetwalker.
“It was not an easy character but I opted for it because it was the most challenging of all. As an actor I felt that I could essay Madhuri (name of her character) much better and no one has portrayed a prostitute in a more convincing way than I am doing,” says Veena, who feels that even Kareena Kapoor could not become the real Chameli.
“Though she did the movie, there were certain parts in which she was not convincing and the audience could not relate to it. I wanted it to be as convincing as seeing the real Madhuri on screen. To make the portrayal as realistic as possible, I did a lot of homework. I lived with a real streetwalker in her house, studied her body language, her mannerisms, the way she would talk on the phone or lure customers. I have portrayed it all in the film,” she adds.
‘Portraying the character in a real way’ is the reason behind the raunchy photographs that Veena shot for the movie.
“Being an actor, you have to do everything to make the role convincing. That includes getting into the skin of the character. It was not easy for me to pose in a bikini because that is not something I wear even at home. I took a month to mentally condition myself to do this shoot and practiced the poses to look comfortable,”she says.
She adds, “When I took up this role, I prepared myself for a certain kind of body language and dialogues. It required a lot of courage to wear that bikini and pose for the camera. But I put Veena Malik to sleep and went ahead to portray Madhuri. People should know that what they see on the screen is not Veena but the character she is playing. And if I fail to do this, they will say she is not a good actress,” she explains.
However, the actress remains unfazed about the controversies it might generate back in Pakistan. “If there is a backlash, it would be a clear sign that my work has been noticed. Since I am an artiste, I stick to the rule of doing my job convincingly,” reasons Veena, who is unafraid of any repercussions.
“I am a strong person who has been taking her decisions since the age of 13. I will continue to do so,” she ends.
