Veterans groom young talent
It was a wait for over four long months, and the results came as a surprise to the young designers who recently won the National Textile Corporation’s Young Designer Hunt. Now the winners chosen in five different categories are preparing to be groomed by designer Raghavendra Rathore and work on Brand India, a new apparel and accessories brand which will be launched by NTC.
Kovid Kapoor, 24, the winner in fashion apparels category, feels recognition from a government body has its own advantages. “Working with independent designers gets you experience, but having a national recognition adds a lot to your portfolio,” says Kovid, who has already worked with designers Ritu Beri and Gaurav Gupta and is an expert in illustration.
Advaeita Mathur, 23, who has been designing fashion jewellery is bubbling with new ideas. “In future, I will try to make my designs all the more interesting by combining traditional designs with modern techniques. I plan to create minimal, modern and chic jewellery that can complement western as well as Indian outfits,” says Advaeita who created jewellery pieces out of hardware scraps, electric fuses, nuts and bolts and brass.
Winner in handicraft and heritage category, Narendra Pal Singh, 29, feels his aim to help local artisans has got a new boost. “I had been working in this field for over five years now, and the reason for me to take up handicraft over all other options is to help the local artisans who otherwise do not find employment. After winning this award, I am in a better position to help them,” says Narendra.
