Vote for Virat as election ambassador

After boxer MC Mary Kom was roped in to spread awareness about elections, it’s time for cricketer Virat Kohli to encourage youngsters to cast their vote in the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections. Posters of the young cricketer asking people to “Teeka Lagao Matdaan Ka” will soon be put across the city to create awareness.

He will be heard on various radio stations and seen on TV channels, asking the youth to channelise their energy by participating in the elections. We check with youngsters if this would help in motivating youngsters to come out and vote.
Students think that roping in somebody who is already so popular among the youngsters would certainly help in creating a buzz. Awadh Nagpal, a undergraduate student of Khalsa College, says, “Virat always keeps making headlines, either for his game or style sense. The best part is that he is as popular among girls as among the boys. I’m sure he’d motivate the young people to come out of their comfort zone and vote for the right candidate,” he says.
Agrees Rahul Saroh, a final year student of Dyal Singh College, “We have seen the number of people increase in events like a marathon race when celebs joined it. I’m sure Virat’s popularity among youngsters would encourage them to follow his message.”
However, not everybody thinks that this is the right way to approach youngsters. Vrinda Gupta, a final year student of Statistics (Hons), Ramjas College, thinks that the government should try and explain to youngsters the importance of voting through various campaigns. “Of course, roping in a cricket star or a Bollywood star would encourage a lot of people to come out and vote. But a campaign like this would not educate them about the importance of voting. I wish a social activist does the same thing,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
