Weather the winter
When Frank Sinatra crooned Baby its cold outside many girls swooned and wanted to be told to stay indoors. But not anymore. With the emerging skin care, winters need not be dry and dreadful anymore.
You can keep your skin glowing with tips from Chandrika Mahendra, research scientist, with Himalaya, as you plan ahead of the season.
Winter Winners
In winters, the skin has a lot of moisture loss, since we usually tend to drink less water. Besides making sure you’re tanked up on the fluid intake, external sources are always a boon. During winter, the outer layer of skin becomes very dry, therefore it is important to keep the skin moisturised all times. Even if one has oily skin, light moisturising is a must after cleansing to keep the skin soft and supple.
Nothing but natural
Toning and cleansing is essential before you lather on the moisturisers. Look for natural ingredients like cocoa butter, aloe vera and almond oil when picking the body butters and creams. Cocoa butter is rich in Vitamin E and aloe has the potency to keep the moisture intact, besides anti-oxidant properties that keep it moisturised all day. Winter Cherry (Ashwagandha) has been well known since the time Ayurveda existed. To keep the lip cracks at bay, the best ingredients found in lip balms that keep them soft and supple are mango butter, kokum butter and sal butter.
Soak in the sun
Winter sun is quite harsh during the day and is often neglected. It’s best to use sunscreens that have carrot seed oil, grapeseed oil or wheat germ oil as these are rich in anti-oxidants that help protect from the harmful rays of the sun. Other few essential oils are chamomile, geranium, hyssop, lavender, patchouli, rose and sandalwood. Avoid using soap-based face creams. Instead go for aloe and cucumber base for dry skin and neem base for oily skin. Also avoid streaking, colouring or rebonding your hair during winters as it tends to make it dry. Also, indulge in a hair spa once every fortnight.
