Web is GenY’s cinema screen

Internet has revolutionised the way we experienced films. Now one can just download a movie and lie down on a couch and watch it. Making the process even more convenient are a few sites where one can watch full-length online films that are both free and legal. One can now watch hits like 3 Idiots, Band Baaja Baarat and Rock On among others.
YouTube’s BoxOffice is one such service where movies (some even in high definition) can be immediately streamed. BoxOffice promises to feature one blockbuster movie every month to users in India for free. Yahoo’s Movieplex is another one which has eight Bollywood movies to start with.
“The last five years have been instrumental in bringing cinema to our laps. Now there are so many websites offering these services for free. It saves one the effort of going to a theatre, renting a DVD or buying a pirated disc and watching a bad print. I am sure if we have many more such sites, it will be the death of piracy,” explains Ajay Sharma, a finance executive.
The best part about these services is the picture quality of the movies which is usually crystal clear. “If you get a film in high definition there is nothing like it. Also it’s easy on the pocket as the main thing behind these services is the Internet, which is quite affordable. Another positive is that even the new releases are available soon after their release. Moreover, regional films are also up there for free viewing,” says media professional Vanshika Jain.
However, HR manager Viren Tripathy begs to differ. He says, “Internet is a very metro phenomenon. Satellite towns are yet to experience it to the fullest. Not everybody can afford an Internet connection or original DVDs. For them pirated DVDs is the only way to watch the new releases without shelling a lot on movie tickets or renting them.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
