What is this artist using to illustrate?
Typography! According to designtaxi.com, Moldova-based artist, Midu1995 (username), is using lettering to make examples of superheroes and villains. Typefaces have tremendous character on their own and a high cool quotient already, but the way that the artist creates illustrations using words that may be matched or recognised along with the typeface or character, is amazing. He defines each personality with attributes that describe the individual himself. For instance, the art work involving the Joker, Batman’s evil nemesis, is made of words like, ‘funny’, ‘crazy’, ‘mouth blade face’, which characterise the Joker as a devilish, yet funny, villain who likes to put a blade on people’s faces to give them a scar similar to what he has on his own.
Similarly, his other characters include Spiderman, The Joker, Batman, Bane and Iron Man, each shown with their own unique set of traits. The silhouettes represent the characters’ appearances and the artist’s ability to depict their personas comes out strongly through the typography. It’s about time someone recognised the beauty of character typography in today’s world of art while it’s also pertinent that superheroes and villains can be depicted with a fresh twist — or slash, as the case may be.
