What is Google Green?
The world has come to a point today where we can perhaps imagine a planet without greenery but cannot imagine the Internet without Google. The search engine giant, however, hasn’t forgotten its responsibility towards nature and has hence chalked out a plan called Google Green” which is Google’s objective of creating a world wide web that is better suited for the environment.
Energy issues have become a major priority for Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page. The carbon neutral company is now aiming at becoming the world’s largest energy efficient company. It has pledged to reduce its carbon footprint to zero. Google is already investing heavily in wind and solar energy farms to minimise the harmful impacts of the rapid climate change. Debleena Bose, co-founder of a technological firm, says, “Google has always been a visionary. It has been serving people for free, helping them communicate across the world. This project is in keeping with their original vision “change the world for good.” She continues, “Now Google wants to build a virtual world that’s free of impurities. They have designed their data centres, which are one of the world’s largest, using features such as smart temperature controls. Their ‘free cooling’ technique uses outside air and recycles water for cooling, to ensure minimum loss of energy.”
The company is also encouraging the use of electric cars and is making their server farms more energy efficient. Shashwat Raj, media officer, Greenpeace India, says, “We conducted a leader board rating where Google ranked high among companies that address environmental issues. Such initiatives are economically beneficial in the long run as well even though they require heavy investments initially.”
