When do bands battle it out?

For all aspiring musicians, the dream is to open for a renowned artiste or band. And if that happens to be Parikrama, it doesn’t get better. Talented bands from across the country are fiercely trying to outdo each other in the ultimate band face off, the Converse Original Band, which concludes on December 16.

With finalists picked out from Bengaluru and Kolkata, the action shifts to Pune and Mumbai this week.
Bengaluru band Jekyll and Hyde won the local leg and the participants were enthralled at this opportunity. With stardust in their eyes, and hopes of breaking into the music scene eminently, such competitions are a blessing for these boy bands. Avinash, of Acid Quartet says, “As long as we get shows, we are safe. It’s almost like every block or suburb has it’s own set of bands. When you look at how conducive the environment is for musicians like me, it’s heartening. We would love to play at such shows.”
It’s another example of luxury enjoyed by young teenagers, which is more than their contemporaries and seniors can say. Even as youngsters set foot into colleges, they are instantly enamoured by the fame and glory of being in a band. Talent apart, a platform is also necessary for them to come afore, they feel. Reuben Jacob, who also participated in the talent hunt, and who plays for Clown with a Frown says, “It’s in college that we have time to jam, improve our tonal quality and figure out what the band really wants to do. We also make sure we’re on the same page when it comes to having ambitions for the band.”
Swarathma performed at the finale held in Bengaluru, and performed tracks that have been huge hits at Larmer Tree Festival and Awtar Festival held in London and Morocco respectively. Ratheesh M, a guitarist says, “It’s easier for bands today since they have the right exposure and promotion from the word go. As long as they get their focus in place and can establish a WOW factor, they’re good to go. While these competitions are great platforms, it can only take you that far since the music industry has become very competitive.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
