When does the Lion sing?
India has been attracting huge musicians in drones over the past years. The trend spills into 2013 with rapper Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion is all set to perform in Pune and Gurgaon on January 11 and 13 respectively. This is the country’s first high profile concert in the New Year and fans are visibly excited.
After this tweet, ‘Shout out. 2 my peoples in India. U ready 4 tha Lion! We comn’ there was considerable excitement on social networking site on the impending arrival of the star. A multi-faceted musician, Snoop Dogg is going to perform for the first time in India. He apparently changed his name to Snoop Lion after embracing Rastafarianism.
Though hip-hop fans in Gurgaon and Pune will be the lucky ones to witness the show, there are some ardent fans across the country who are trying to make it to either venue to watch him live too. Arzoo Shah, a management student in Pune says, “Of late, Pune has been attracting some interesting artistes. The Weekender was a great success here. Going by that, I’m sure Snoop Dogg will draw a hefty crowd.”
The cash registers are certainly ringing for the hip-hop star’s show. There will be a series of well-known Indian DJs who will play in the run up to Snoop Dogg’s show. The gig will begin at noon. Ankit M, a resident of New Delhi says, “It’s always nice to have a gig here. There are enough patrons for different kinds of music. However, my friends in cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru are complaining that his concert will not take place there.” True enough, there has been considerable buzz here but some ardent music lovers are willing to travel the distance to watch him live. Arpita Ganesh and her brother will be in Gurgaon around that time for a family function. “We will be in New Delhi around the time Snoop Dogg is performing. A whole bunch of us cousins are going to be together so we have decided to watch his concert. I hope its fun!”
He’s not entirely alien to India. If you remember, the musician made an appearance in the 2008 hit film Singh is Kingg, and rapped in the title song end credits. Mayur Vishal, a young musician in Bengaluru says, “After a slew of rock and metal bands, I’m glad India is encouraging rap musicians too. We are no strangers to that genre.”
