When is the Octoberfest?

If you nodded in agreement and applauded his profound wisdom when Homer Simpson shared his unique insight on beer with his son (“Bart, a woman is like beer. They look good, they smell good and you’d step over your own mother just to get one!”), then Kingfisher’s Great Indian Octoberfest is the right event for you to meet fellow beer-lovers and celebrate the golden elixir.

“We Indians definitely deserve our own Oktoberfest”, said self-confessed beer-o-phile and Mumbai-based engineer, Sudhir Mishra, adding, “It’s great that we don’t have to fly to Germany to enjoy the spirit of the festival.”
Inspired by Munich’s big annual beer shindig, TGIOF, which is in its eight edition in Bengaluru, is being promoted as a destination event, singular to the city. The buzz is building up in cities like Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Chennai and more with close to 70 mini-festivals and pre-launch events and parties in the works. The Hyderabad leg, to be held between October 5 and 7, will play out as a prelude to the one in Bengaluru, scheduled between October 12 and 14. “It’s great to be launching the festival in Hyderabad and hopefully, we will be able to do the same with two to three more cities from next year,” said GV Vilas, managing director, Common Colors, an event management company.
Samar Singh Sheikhawat, senior VP of marketing at UB Ltd — spoke about Jayamahal Palace, the new venue in Bengaluru for TGIOF, saying, “The venue is quite up-market and extremely picturesque, and with the increased ticket prices, the event will be a really classy affair.”
And where there is beer, there will be music. The three separate stages planned in Bengaluru are expected to host the likes of Raghu Dixit, Indian Ocean, Shankar Tucker, Agam, Lagori, Chronic Xorn, Jagged Surge, Live Banned, Javed Ali, Shaa’ir & Func, Divine Raga and more, representing the widest possible spectrum of genres. For Chennai law student, Jayanth Ramesh, it just can’t get any better. “Last year’s TGIOF was a serious musical treat, especially the Poets of the Fall gig. I can’t wait to see who they bring down this time,” he said.
Put this together with a tonne of beer games, kitschy flea markets, food stalls and artists, nothing else is required but a gang of boisterous friends and a bright, sunny day.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
