When partners become stylists

Even as Ek tha Tiger is smashing all records and has managed to reinstall Salman Khan as the undisputed Box Office czar, his politically-incorrect responses at press conferences continue to grab eyeballs. On being asked about his protectiveness and comments about co-star Katrina’s dressing style in the movie, he said, “As the hero of the film if I find she is not looking good, I register my opinion.

If I don’t like the colour of the outfit, I point it out. If I don’t like the fitting I say it and if I find it too revealing I object… I believe you should eat food of your choice but should dress according to the choice of somebody you like.”
Is dressing according to somebody you like and foregoing one’s own choice really that simple? “I wear what I like and whatever I am comfortable in. Even if my partner doesn’t like something I wear, I do try and convince him that it looks good. Also, he is quite aware about my choice and keeps that in mind while making suggestions,” says DJ Barkha Kaul.
Among many disagreements that almost every couple has to face are also some about clothes. However, it all depends on how the disagreements are dealt with.
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian, known for her scandalous sex tape and short-lived marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries, caught the eye of global fashionistas because of her renewed fashion style. The change is believed to have been brought about by her latest love, rapper Kanye West, who seems to be exerting a certain influence on her fashion sense. But is this just a one-off case?
Not really. “In an ideal situation, a partner should know what his significant other likes to wear. But if at all a situation arises where my partner wants me to wear something that I am probably not very sure about, I would still wear it just to keep the faith. At times you’ve got to relent to their wishes,” smiles designer Varun Bahl.
Then there are those who wish to find a middle path to avoid any bad feelings. “I do value my partner’s opinion and think twice if he doesn’t like me in a certain dress. However, we both then discuss about it and come to a mutual conclusion. To tell you the truth, I usually stick to my choice,” adds entrepreneur and socialite Ameeta Seth.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
