Where are princesses getting a makeover?
On Tumblr. Disney’s conservatism is well known. Almost all its animated films feature a majority of women (read: princesses) who are white, blonde and delicate.
In fact, it took until 2009 for the first African-American princess to appear on screen, and even Merida from Brave had to get a makeover of sorts before being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Fans clamouring for more racial variety among the royal characters are less than happy with Disney’s latest offering, Frozen, set to release in November 2013, which is said to feature yet another white, blonde and feminine princess.
So they decided to take matters into their own hands. As reported by Mashable, This Could Have Been Frozen has Tumblr promoting an alternate Frozen where some of the lead characters are people of colour.
The flick might be based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, The Snow Queen, but This Could Have Been.. states that not all Northern Europeans are white. It even pays a tribute to Scandinavian culture by having some protagonists dressed in Sami clothing.
This Could Have Been Frozen might look like a small, fun campaign, but it’s part of a bigger project of sorts, quite similar to the method that Star Trek fans immediately began to use to ‘correct’ things they didn’t like about Star Trek Into Darkness.
But will it push Disney into experimenting more? Only time will tell.
