Where can you get a degree in Twilight?
At a new centre in the Manchester Metropolitan University that will focus completely on teaching classic spine-chilling literature, but at the same time, include popular contemporary TV shows and vampire flicks, such as Twilight, True Blood, etc.
The degree is aptly titled ‘Gothic Studies’, and professors have stated that the subject is no longer only of interest to fans of Gothic tales or horror, but has entered the mainstream now. Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, coupled with the worldwide fandom of its lead stars, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, is widely credited with the rise in popularity of the genre.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the course will also cover Gothic architecture in Victorian times and Goth bands and pop-culture trends.
Taking a leaf out of this book, an undergraduate module on Gothic literature is set to be launched at Birmingham City University. This will feature seminars and discussions on books, such as Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events, which, Dr Serena Trowbridge of the institute claims, are better examples of Gothic fiction than Twilight.
