Where did men wear wooden planks?
Male models strutted around in outlandish outfits and their faces painted black at the recent Men’s Fashion Week in London. The men also appeared to have their faces nailed into wooden planks as they walked down the ramp. This kind of fashion may be considered ‘cool’ on the runway, but could one pass through an airport security check or walk on the roads dressed this way?
Delhi-based fashion stylist and designer Amit Ahuja says, “It is done for the ‘wow’ factor. These outfits cannot be worn in daily life. If people wore weird stuff like this in public, everyone would stare at them. It is the stylist and designer’s call on the kind of look they want on the ramp.” He adds, “Men don’t prefer such loud and fluorescent colours as the ones sported during fashion week. Those colours are definitely an embarrassment.”
While the fashion week showcased such hideous outfits, British Fashion Council member David Gandy says that he wishes to turn London into the menswear capital of the world.
The collection presented by Royal College of Arts graduate Lou Dalton also featured boiled wool and tartan trousers. Things started looking outlandish when models dressed in dark workhouse greys paraded about in hats and bizarre facial contraptions made from planks of wood.
Designer Vijay Rana offers his views on unusual fashion statements, saying, “These outfits will never make it from ‘ramp to reality’ as they are only meant to create a certain ambience during fashion shows. In India, such statements can definitely not be made as the chances of such creations being accepted in the market are very low.”
