Where in the world are bikinis banned?
This is one place you may not be able to sunbathe or show off your beach bod. A coastal town in Italy, Vietri Sul Mare, is banning bikinis to prevent tourists and locals from wearing anything too ‘skimpy’ or ‘revealing’.
According to The Huffington Post, the ban on bikinis and bare chests was initiated in 2010, but now the mayor, Franco Benincasa, wants to reiterate the law with the imposition of a heavy fine — 500 euros! In an attempt to save the town’s modesty, offenders shall not flaunt an undesirable amount of skin in public spaces. Town spokeswoman Andrea Pellegrino was quoted as saying, “Enforcing the law is essential for the area’s image.”
The move has shocked many locals and tourists. But, according to The Daily Mail, local Police Commissioner Vincenzo Alfano was quoted as saying, “The ban was created to protect the image and decorum of all the townspeople and all the tourists in the area. Very often, we have witnessed indecent and shameful scenes of people entering public places, such as bars and restaurants, shirtless or in costume. In our opinion, it is an attitude that must be eliminated.” Tough luck. Is this Italian town being somewhat prudish, given that their culture and art celebrate the human body loud and clear? Or is this just a way of making money out of the violations of the law that are bound to occur?
