Where to write a novel in 140 letters?
On Twitter recently, 21 well-known authors were asked to weave a story in 140 characters. A story that will have characters and you can read it in a few seconds. Here are a few examples:
Charlie Higson
Jack was sad in the orphanage til he befriended a talking rat who showed him a hoard of gold under the floor. Then the rat bit him & he died.
Sophie Hannah
I had land, money. For each rejected novel I built one house. Ben had to drown because he bought Plot 15. My 15th book? The victim drowned.
Hari Kunzru
I'm here w/ disk. Where ru? Mall too crowded to see. I don't feel safe. What do you mean you didn't send any text? Those aren't your guys?
Jilly Cooper
Tom sent his wife’s valentine to his mistress and vice versa. Poor Tom’s a-cold and double dumped.
And then our Indian ‘intellectuals’ decided to take a shot. Mahesh Dattani, director, actor and writer, opened with a summary of the play Bravely Fought the Queen — “Women sexuality stunted like a bonsai plant.”
Comedian Sorabh Pant’s attempt of his own novel The Wednesday Soul, “A crime-fighting girl from Delhi dies and discovers there’s a lot more chaos in the afterlife. And, worse: bad puns.”
Sorabh also tried out his hands on some other famous novels inspired by authors like:
Gone With The Pind — Arundhati O’Hara moves to a village in Gurgaon but, leaves it saying, “Frankly, my dear. I’m going to build a dam.”
Bod Of Small Things — Bebo was a fat girl. She soon discovered even laborers didn’t like her. She joined a gym and found a Prince.
Satanic Purses — A wife carries a giant purse, which is so big it gets banned in six countries. But, she finds her own country in the purse.
Amateur writer, Priya Kapadia summed up fairy tales. “Fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
