Who was given an amazing tribute?
Legendary Formula 1 racer Ayrton Senna. Considered by many to be the greatest ever to place on the racing podium, the Brazilian driver won three world championships before being killed in an accident while participating in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, sending shock waves across the sporting world.
Honda has now come out with what could possibly be one of sporting folklore’s greatest ever tributes. They have released a video, ‘Sound of Honda – Ayrton Senna 1989’ that celebrates the icon like never before.
Way back in 1989, Ayrton Senna completed a lap of the Japanese F1 circuit in Suzuka, setting a new world record. Monitoring the lap was Honda’s engine telemetry system, which recorded information from the car. Now, almost 20 years after his death, Honda has unbelievably used that same data, along with some speakers and lights to recreate that astonishing lap. They have even used a simulator to calculate the number of LEDs required, and entered in the speed data to attain the sequence of the LEDs lighting up.
Those who are sharing it on viral forums are calling it the ‘Ghost of Senna’. The video showcases the lap almost with the noise of a ghost, one amazing driver fusing his soul with that of his racing engine, lighting up the track. A perfect example of technology meeting human emotion — if you’re a sports fan, don’t bet on not tearing up after watching this.
