Working for a better planet
“I believe in the power of design. I believe in how simple ideas can change lives,” says Joao Lamoglia, Rio de Janeiro-based design whiz. Joao — who was awarded the Red Dot Design Prize in 2011 — is working on a product that converts the energy generated by your breathing into electrical energy that can be used to charge IOS devices.
“Yes, we are trying to tap wind and solar energy, but what we’re doing is not enough,” say Joao of his inspiration. “Human energy, passive energy, can be used to recharge pacemakers, smart phones, mp3 players etc.”
To harness this energy, Joao has created a prototype of a device which can be worn as a mask over the nose and mouth. It converts and then uses the energy dispelled by your breathing to recharge an electronic device. The mask can be used when you’re out for a jog, or even when you’re napping.
“I feel I owe a great debt to the planet, so I design products that can minimise my carbon footprint,” Joao says. “I believe, impossible is temporary.”
