World’s first 3D art book

While the concept of 3D art is yet to influence most contemporary artists, it just took one long leap ahead. A book of 3D art, Mellifluence, was showcased at the India Art Fair recently. The book features the works of artist Akash Choyal, who has carved a niche through his trio-graphs.

The artist, whose works have been minimised to suit the size of the book, says that he was toying with the idea of doing a book on art for a long time. “I used to make notes of interesting points that I wanted to use in my work. But the idea of a 3-D book came only last year while I was talking to Sangeeta Juneja from Gallery Artchill,” says Akash, whose works try to capture images of the unconscious.
The 40x50 cm art book that is priced 850 USD includes Akash’s most famous artworks — “Aurora”, “Grab The Stars”, “My Arena”, “Marathon for the Key”, “A Ramble and Levitation”, for which he also received a National Award from Lalit Kala Academy in 2010. In addition to six 3-D artworks, the book contains two sculptures and six fibre-glass works.
Akash says that each of the artworks in the book can be displayed independently. “The works have been put in the book in a way that the CDs can be mounted and put on display,” he says.
Sangeeta Juneja, publisher of Mellifluence, says that this is an initiative to make art more accessible. “In fact, within few days of launching, we booked 15 copies and all have been bought by NRIs. I believe it will strengthen India’s position in art internationally,” says Sangeeta Juneja, adding that only 500 copies of the book were printed.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
