Yoko’s date with Delhi’s art circuit
It’s not for nothing that musician John Lennon once described his wife Yoko Ono as “the world’s most famous unknown artist”. As Lennon rightly said, everyone knows her name, but no one knows what she actually does. Coming to the
capital in January 2012, to display her works, the artist is not only going to give her fans here a visual treat in the form of her artworks but would also be performing.
“She is very excited about exhibiting and performing in India for the first time. She is planning to be here for nearly 10 days, giving her enough time to install her exhibition, perform and interact with people here,” says Roshini of Vadehra Art Gallery where the legendary artist will showcase her works from January 13 till March 10, 2012.
As for Ono, she has been to India before and shares, “John and I visited India together and enjoyed it very much. My show, ‘Our Beautiful Daughters’, is a tribute to Indian women who are intelligent, loving and caring of the future of their country.”
When asked if Indian audiences will relate to her, she replies “Yes. We are all on the same boat called planet earth.” Apparently, the director of the Astrup Fearnley Museum, Gunnar Kvaran introduced the gallery to Yoko Ono, “and we were obviously instantly excited about bringing her first ever exhibition to India. The discussion with her started about two years ago,” adds Roshini.
Yoko is all excited about her India trip. “She is producing a new work for India. However, we cannot reveal any information about it as she wants it to be a surprise till the exhibition opens on January 12,” Roshini adds.
The exhibition, at Vadehra Art Gallery in Okhla and in Defence Colony, will also feature some of her popular works like Wish Tree, which has been exhibited all over the world.
The gallery is also collaborating with various schools, hospitals, cultural institutions and other public areas to put up her interactive artworks. “We are also planning to show her work at the India Art Fair in January,” says Roshini.
