Youth demand more jobs in public sector
Addressing the students of the St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, US President Barack Obama said that he doesn’t want any young person to be dismissive. He advised Indian youngsters to take up jobs in the public sector as he felt that in some cases the private sector in India is moving faster than the former. “I hope some of you will get involved in public service which can be frustrating and slow. But India will need you not just as businessmen but also as leaders who will make government more responsible and is as important. Otherwise there will be an imbalance,” he said.
At a time when many youngsters tend to take up private sector jobs for better salary, we checked with them if they would really like to work in the public sector.
Priyanshi Gulati, a second year student of literature in Delhi University, says that she would like to work for the society, “But it is not necessary that you always take up a government job for that purpose. There are a lot many other options like working with an NGO or taking up a teaching job (which is not necessarily government). I would like to work as a lecturer and would cater to society’s development in a way.”
Contrary to this, Sushant Gupta, a BBA student, thinks that there’s a section of youngsters who vie for public sector jobs but face a dearth of options in the sector. “I have seen my seniors, who are good in studies, sit for various public services examinations and then take up a private job as they don’t get through because of various factors. I think we really need more options to choose from in the public sector,” he says.
