Zooming in on talented youth gone awry
Vivek Agnihotri, known for films such as Chocolate and Hate Story, is now ready with his next, Freedom. The film features Dance India Dance winner Salman Yusuf Khan in the lead. Vivek started out as an ad filmmaker before moving into filmmaking.
Speaking about his latest film Freedom, the director says, “Freedom is set between 1985-2000, till the millenium night to be precise. It is set against the backdrop of economic liberalisation. On the one hand we were breaking away from socialist policies but on the other we were also becoming the victims of the capitalist system. Freedom deals with a very dramatic plot that shows how the ambitions of the talented youth have gone awry.”
The filmmaker goes on to share some interesting incidents from the shoot of his film, “We were shooting at the Indo-Pak border near Jaisalmer when some five or six kids came to see the shoot. I realised that they were all Hindustani. They said that to live in India it was important for them to have Hindustani names. Later they looted our production van and when the team members tried to stop them an army of some 100 kids arrived as back-up. We were shocked.”
He continues, “We had to stop our shoot and come back to Delhi. Isn’t this a blot on our government’s border control?”
Rumours say that the lives of celebrities like Sanjay Dutt and Parveen Babi will be shown in Freedom. When questioned Vivek says, “Freedom uses a lot of real life incidents and characters that are based on real people.”
