Comic thriller has little thrill

Movie name:

Cast:
Mohsin Akhtar, Muzzi, Shilpa Shukla, Luna Lahkar, Rajender Sethi, Rajesh Vivek
Director:
Aman Mihani
Rating:

Mumbai Mast Kalandar is a story of dreams and aspirations. Director Aman Mihani seems to be inspired by his own story when he chucked his high-profile job as a civil engineer to make the movie. He has put in all sincere efforts in making a comic thriller, but the movie fails miserably.
Director Aman Mihani has tried to create humour amidst a lot of confusion but all in vain. Wonder what he was thinking about when he was working on the script of the film. The story never moves anywhere as scenes and characters spring out of nowhere. Many a times he seems to have taken the audience for granted and the funny dialogues too are a waste. Music is peppy, especially the song Sun zara but sounds out of place in the situation.
Mumbai Mast Kalandar is about a kidnapping gone wrong. A builder is upset with the way his son has been wasting money in parties and gambling. So, to teach him lesson, the builder decides to get him kidnapped. He hires a don Bade Bhaiyya (Rajesh Vivek) who in turn assigns the work with a couple of new entries in his gang. Two brothers — debutants Ram and Shyam (Mohsin Akhtar and Muzzi) —always dreamt of making it big as celebrity dons come to Mumbai to realise their dreams. In the meantime, two best friends Rhea and Meghna (Shilpa Shukla and Luna Lahkar), who run a salon, meet Ram and Shyam. The builder is trying to oust them from the salon and sell it for a better price. Luna dreams of winning the Oscars someday. The girls get to know of the kidnapping plan and decide to kidnap the builder’s son for money. Ram and Shyam fail in their attempts and Bade Bhaiyya hires Don Shensha to complete the job. The film ends in a series of comic endeavours. Don Shensha tries to imitate Amitabh Bachchan from Agneepath… Yawn.
Debutants ex-Mr India Mohsin Akhtar and Muzzi could need some training in acting. Luna Lahkar hardly has any role to perform. Shilpa Shukla is fine but she looks old amongst the debutants. There is nothing much to say about the rest of the performers in the film.
Overall, Mumbai Mast Kalandar does not generate any interest, especially when you have far better options like Yamla Pagla Deewana in the same genre.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
