Too loud to be any good
Hello Darling is the plight of three glamorous looking and intelligent women who have to bear a lewd and lecherous boss at the office. The director has tried to tell a simple story in a complicated manner set in a city like Mumbai. It is all about the plight of working women who have to bear the brunt at their offices. There is no hero in the story.
Three glamorous girls who share a house — Candy, Mansi and Satvari (Celina Jatily, Gul Panag and Eesha Koppikhar) — belong to different strata of society and work at a posh designing office in Mumbai. They have to face their playboy boss played by Hardik (Javed Jaffrey) who has an innocent Gujarati housewife Purvi who speaks in Gujarati most of the times. He has the habit of addressing the girls in the office as “hello darling”. Hardik keeps making passes at the girls in the office and offers them a promotion only if they please him in bed.
Hardik has a secretary, played by Aswari Joshi, who keeps him informed about the goings on in the office.
The three girls decided to outmart their boss in some way or the other and teach him a lesson in life. The trio hatch a plan to bring Hardik down so one night on the pretext of pleasing him in bed they kidnap him and chain him in their house. They seize control of his company and bring about changes. In the meantime, Hardik’s wife Purvi contacts the Nari Sanghatana who runs a pati sudhar samiti run by Seema Biswas to tame down her lecherous husband. What leads to it is a mix-up of characters and a series of comic events. Rocky, a wannabe Elvis Presley (Chunky Pandey) who plays Celina’s live-in boyfriend, makes in comic appearances a few times in the film.
Hello Darling is supposed to be a remake of the excellent 1994 Tamil film Magalir Mattum, starring Kamal Haasan. Unfortunately, the film never got released. It was said to be a remake of the 1980 Hollywood satire Nine to Five, starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The film was later remade in Hindi titled, Ladies Only, where Randhir Kapoor played the role of a lecherous boss. Sarika played the lead in this film.
Unfortunately, director Manoj Tiwari, who has rehashed the plot of these remakes, has done a shoddy job. The performances of Celina Jaitly and Eesha Koppikhar are loud and garrish. The comedy is just a cheap rehash of old C-grade films. It does anything, but make you laugh.
Gul Panag, Javed Jafffrey, Divya Dutta and Seema Biswas are the only saving grace of the film but unfortunately they could not help make a decent job of the garrish script. Chunky Pandey should have completely avoided doing the film rather than accepting a role like that.
Anil Manga, who makes his debut as Gul’s boyfriend, is hardly noticeable. Sunny Deol’s presence in the climax has apparently not added any charm to the film. Music maestro Pritam has used the remake of aa jaane ja song from Intequaam, but the music is anything but hummable. On the whole, if you are looking for a few good laughs on a lazy weekend, just avoid the movie.
