Unbelievable heroics (Telugu)
Gen X star Prabhas, who tasted success as a lover boy in Darling and Mr Perfect, is on action mode this time in Rebel. However, repulsive and gory action sequences could put paid to his plans to score a hat-trick of hits.
His well-built body and fiery performance brings to life the role of an “angry young man” who sets out to avenge the death of his parents but the exaggerated and unbelievable heroic feats dampen the proceedings and the climax fight (inspired by Kill Bill series) is hard to digest even for die-hard movie buffs.
Director Lawrence seems to haven’t come out of the hangover of his earlier hits like Mass and Don and we could find traces of both the films in Rebel, which scores high on repulsive action and less on content. The director totally banks on the blatant skin show of Tammanah, slam-bang action, suave-looking villains and few jokes and brief father-son relationship, but it’s not sufficient enough to sustain audience interest for nearly three hours.
Apart from script writing, choreography and direction, Lawrence also turned composer with his latest film but was not up to the mark. However, veteran actor Krishnam Raju displays traces of his acting brilliance, in a special appearance, while Deeksha Seth does an ill-defined role.
Prabhas arrives in Hyderabad and befriends Brahmanandam and begins to make enquiries about a don duo (Stephen Robert) in various places. He comes to know that Tammanah, daughter of Stephen’s kin, could be knowing about Stephen’s whereabouts and tries to woo her. Tammanah falls in love with Prabhas, believing him to be a timid guy. But she is shocked, when she finds Prabhas and his team, smashing down thugs brutally on road and comes to know the reason behind.
