19-yr-old kills self over study stress
A 19-year-old engineering student, who was under severe study pressure, committed suicide by jumping off a highrise building in Thakur Village in Kandivali (east) late on Sunday night, the police said.
According to officials from the Samta Nagar police that is investigating the case, the deceased Pratik Ramesh Kamat (19) jumped from the 24th floor of Challenger Tower in Thakur village area at around 10.30 pm on Sunday night. He lived in Aangan Building in the same area. He had gone to Challenger Tower to meet a friend.
Pratik was a first year engineering student. He was pursuing an engineering degree in telecommunications from Thakur College of Engineering and Technology. According to the police, Pratik had failed in five subjects, but was allowed to keep terms (ATKT). However, he was depressed due to the ATKTs.
Before taking the extreme step, Pratik sent a detailed SMS to his mother. In the SMS he said that he did not know how he had failed, despite studying so hard. He also mentioned that he was sorry for not having lived up to their expectations and apologised for taking the extreme step.
The police does not suspect foul play. Pratik’s father works for a private firm in Nigeria and returned to India on Monday after learning about his child’s death.
When contacted, psychiatrist Harish Shetty said, “Mental health issues are common among engineering students as no counselling support exists in such colleges. ATKTs only add to the pressure.”
