2-yr-old dies in fire at Mumbra
A two-year-old boy lost his life after a fire broke out in his Mumbra residence on Saturday morning. The deceased’s mother and brother have also sustained burns and the Thane fire brigade is trying to ascertain the cause of the fire.
According to official sources, the fire broke out at around 11.15 am on Saturday in a first floor flat of the Green Park Building on Sharifa Road, Mumbra.
“The fire was noticed after neighbours smelt smoke and traced it to the residence of the Kadri family. They broke the door down after repeated knocking elicited no response, following which they saw the flames and started dousing them with water. The fire brigade was also informed and rushed to the spot, after which the fire was brought under control,” said an officer with the Mumbra police.
The three occupants of the house, identified as Mumtaz Kadri (28) and her sons Usman (3) and Zeeshan (2) were rushed to Kalsekar Hospital in Mumbra where Zeeshan was declared dead before admission. The police said that he suffered the worst in the fire, and his body was totally charred. Mum-taz, who has sustained 70 per cent burns, has been shifted to a burns hospital in Airoli. Her husband Shadaab, who runs a shop in Mumbra, was at work at the time of the incident.
Fire brigade officials said that the fire might have been caused due to leakage of cooking gas. “The regulator of the gas cylinder was on when we entered the house, and it is possible that gas might have
leaked. The fire might have started due to a spark, as Mumtaz was cooking at the time,” said a fire brigade official.
Arun Sonde, senior police inspector, Mumbra police station added, “We have registered an accidental death report and are awaiting the fire brigade’s report to ascertain the cause behind the fire.”
