22 kids fall ill after consuming sweets
Twenty two children at a balwadi suffered from food poisoning following consumption of laddoos and chana in Mankhurd on Friday. Among those who fell ill, 17 were admitted to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi.
The eatables were provided by women self-help groups, who have been supplying food at balwadis in Sathe Nagar.
Abhimanyu Vishnu Sarak, chief of the Sai temple adjacent to the balwadi, who saw the children vomiting soon after consuming the food said, “Almost immediately after eating the refreshment provided by the women’s self help group the children started vomiting. I immediately called for an ambulance and rushed the children to the hospital.”
Mr Sarak also filed a police case against the food supplier. The children, however, were said to be stable and were discharged after immediate medical treatment. The medical superintendent from Shatabdi Hospital, Dr Ashok J. Swjavalkar said, “They are under the age of five and don’t have any complication after they were given medicines. Their vomiting stopped after we gave them preliminary treatment.”
Duty doctor Dr Rajendra Sonawane said that the stomach of one of them had to be washed. “After conducting the wash, the samples were sent to a laboratory in Kalina for chemical analysis,” said Dr Sonawne.
Shobha Kirole, manages the self-help group. However, she was unavailable for comment. Vasant Kirawle, who was present at the hospital on behalf of Ms Kirole said, “Children falling sick after consuming laddoos and chana is strange. In Sather Nagar alone we supplied the same food to the 15 other
balwadis, but we didn’t come across any such incident. The food we supplied was prepared on Thursday night.”
