3 detained for carjacking, looting man
The Mulund police has detained three persons in connection with last week’s carjacking case where the driver of a tourist vehicle was mugged by the passengers he was ferrying. The accused, apart from fleeing with the Toyota Innova, worth `14 lakh, robbed him of cash and valuables worth `2,500. The police is interrogating the suspects and will place them under arrest if their involvement in the crime is ascertained.
The incident had taken place on April 14 when Gyanchand Bhartiya, a driver with the Gajanan Tours and Travels was driving the five accused to Shirdi. When they reached the Nevali Naka near Kalyan, the accused asked him to take the Haji Malan Road saying they had to pick up another friend. “One of the accused got down pretending to attend nature’s call, while the other one assaulted him and forced him into the back seat. He was hit on the head with an iron rod and robbed of cash and cellphones worth `2,500,” said senior police inspector J.J. Jadhav of the Mulund police station.
The police had applied sections of kidnapping, illegal confinement, criminal intimidation, assault and robbery. “We have traced three persons who we believe might be involved. Unless their involvement is not determined in the interrogation, we cannot divulge their names and other details,” said Mr Jadhav.
