3 killed, 1 hurt in building collapse
Three people were killed and one was critically injured when part of a roof of a building, which was under repairs, collapsed at Pydhonie on Friday evening.
According to fire officials, part of Khatija Mansion, a six-storey structure, started coming down at 5 pm. It fell on a eatery and a shed on the ground floor of the same building. The deceased have been identified as Imitiaz Siddique (26) and Baleshwar Mahato (26) — both worked in the eatery on which the roof caved in — and Rafiq Shaikh (28).
The firemen rescued four people, who were trapped inside the rubble; three of them died when they reached the hospital, while the third victim, Ayub Sheikh (51), was taken to JJ Hospital for treatment.
The building has been under repairs for the last one year. Residents had vacated it and shifted to a transit camp.
According to civic officials, the building was given the no-objection certificate by the Mhada. Khatija Mansion is an old cess, ground plus three structure; it has
been reconstructed with three more additional floors. “We heard a loud noise, but before we could figure out what had happened, the entire eatery ceiling had caved in,” said Ajay Tiwari, an eyewitness.
According to local residents, another portion of the fourth floor of the building had caved in and one woman and her daughter were injured in the incident. Fire brigade officials are still clearing the debris and checking if more people have been trapped under the debris.
“There could be two more people stuck inside. Unless we remove all the debris, we can’t be sure about the exact number of casualties,” said a senior fire official.
