3 men loot `70 lakh cash at gunpoint

In a daring, well-executed daylight robbery, three persons travelling in a car were looted of cash worth `70 lakh at gunpoint by robbers who intercepted them in another vehicle.
The incident took place in full public view on Wednesday at around 10 am on a busy street just outside the eastern side of Dadar station. The victims are associated with a finance company and the money was being transported from the residence of one of the employees to the firm’s office.
The Bhoiwada police has registered a case of robbery and is investigating the case.
Ashwin Rathod (35), Nilesh Shyamji and another passenger were travelling in their Hyundai Verna and had reached Karishma Bar, which is located in a lane off Dr BA Road.
According to a fruit juice vendor Virendra Singh (32), at around 10.15 am, a white car came from the rear and intercepted the victims’ car before blocking its way. “Three men got down, one of whom was carrying a revolver. One of them first tried to break the windshield with a sharp object, but failed. The other one broke the front left side window of the car. The third person opened the rear left door and snatched the bag. They then got into their car and sped away. It all happened in less than a minute,” Mr Singh said.
The police said that one of the assailants also threatened the victims saying, “Yahaan se bhaag jana, nahin to jaan se marenge, (Get away from here if you want us to spare your life).”
According to the complainants, the cash was kept in two rexine bags. “The cash was being transported to the firm’s office near Hotel Pritam from the residence of Dharmendra Timbadia, whose brother Chetan works for the company. We believe the car used by the robbers is stolen. However, the number does not seem fake. One passerby chased them till the petrol pump near Hotel Bawa, but could not continue the pursuit. No has been injured except Ashwin, who has suffered a minor bruise to his finger because of the broken glass,” said senior police inspector Vikram Patil.
