3-month-old boy died after demolition drive
A demolition drive conducted last week at Jay Ambe Nagar at Mankhurd Ghatkopar link road resulted in the death of a three-month-old infant, who was left out in the cold as civic officials confiscated clothes, blankets of the evicted families during the drive, claims a fact finding report of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Tiss).
The incident came to light after members of the “Transforming M-east ward”, a project by Tiss, released a fact-finding report, which indicated that the death of Nagesh and Yellamma Karminche’s son Durgappa, could be an “indirect effect” of the demolition rive.
“Due to lack of clothes and blankets, they could not cover the child for two consecutive nights. They spent the night on the road without the blanket and bedding, which was confiscated by the civic officials for two days. On February 10, at around 4.30 am, they realised that their child is dead,” stated the fact finding report, which the team will submit to the state and national human right commission on Monday.
According to the post mortem report, Durgappa died of pneumonia. “Though the child’s death is not a direct result of the drive, it was wrong on the part of the authorities to conduct a drive without a notice,” said Gopal Devkar, programme officer of the project.
Around 25 families who were living in the temporary sheds on the service road at Jay Ambe Nagar were evicted.
