5 arrested for abduction, rape of 17-year-old
Five men were arrested in connection with the abduction and rape of a 17-year-old girl early on Thursday. The girl had stormed out of her house after not being given a cellphone by her parents and signaled cars on the Western Express Highway to stop when she picked up by the accused. She had also contemplated suicide by jumping before a train. The police, however, suspects that the victim knew the accused as she was able to provide their precise details.
She lives at a Bandra (east) slum with her family. “She claimed her parents were partial towards her younger brother. Her parents were also opposing her relationship with a boy,” said a police official.
Senior police inspector Ramesh Khakale said the girl left the house at around 1.30 am.
“She first went to the railway tracks in Bandra (east) and contemplated committing suicide, but she could not muster the courage. Later, she reached the Western Express Highway and signaled passing cars when one of them, a Tata Indica stopped. There were five people inside and the girl told them to drive around, as she did not wish to go home. They drove for a while when one of them raped her while the others touched her inappropriately,” said Mr Khakale.
The police arrested Alpesh Rahul Mohite, Ashish Gupta, Nayan Devadiga, Sachin Gupta and Sanjay Jadhav.

‘Information commissioner wanted’
age correspondent
MUMBAI, MAY 31
The ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions (department of personnel and training), has called for applications from common public with specific eligibility for the post of information commissioners in the Central Information Commission (CIC) on May 31.
Though numbers of vacancies have not been mentioned in the advertisement, currently there are only seven central information commissioners, so it is understood that the ministry would select at least three commissioners. Going by the strength, the commission has one chief information commissioner and can have 10 commissioners.
Sandeep Jain, deputy secretary of the ministry states that applicants should be eminent persons in public life with wide knowledge and experience in law, science and technology, social service, management, journalism, mass media, administration and governance. He/she shall not be an MP/MLA of any state/territory. However, Shailesh Gandhi, who recently retired from this post, feels that this process of advertisement is just an eyewash as the selection process goes through a “patronage system”.
