5 held for SRA flats scam

The Vakola police arrested five persons who reportedly conspired with government officials and sold 40 SRA flats worth over `2 crore in Santa Cruz (east) a few years ago. They had forged documents and cheated the builder. Even though these men have been arrested, the mastermind is still at large.
According to the Vakola police, the accused — Dinesh Singh, Raju Gorge, Jagjit Singh, Dinkar Singh and Anand Singh — were traced and arrested in the last two days. They had illegally sold the flats of “Pride of Vakola” building in Gaondevi Vakola pipeline area.
Dinesh was the chairman of the building when the flats were sold, and according to the investigating officer, others were associates of the builder, who is the complainant in the case.
“The complainant’s associates forged documents showing that slumd-wellers, to whom the flats were sold, lived in Mumbai from before 1995. This made them legitimate owners under the SRA scheme,” said the police official, requesting anonymity.
The official added that the accused even bribed the then deputy collector, a SRA official and a police official. “After the builder learnt about it, he approached the high court. Following the court order, we have arrested the accused. The mastermind is still at large and few others are wanted in the case,” he added.
The accused were booked for cheating, forgery and trespassing charges. Dinesh and Raju were arrested on Wednesday, and were remanded to police custody till March 2 by a magistrate’s court. The other three were arrested on Thursday and will be produced in the court on Friday.
