5-year-old boy mowed down by cement mixer
A five-year-old boy was crushed underneath the wheels of a cement mixer truck in the Saat Rasta area on Saturday afternoon, causing uproar among his neighbours and in the area. The police managed to quell the mob and arrested the driver of the truck.
According to the NM Joshi Marg police, the incident occurred at around 3.40 pm behind the Sitaram Mills in Saat Rasta on Saturday.
“A badly maintained road behind the mill compound leads to a cement factory and these trucks are always coming and going. There are some hutments on the road too and the deceased, Sohail Sheikh, used to stay in one of these,” said an officer with the NM Joshi Marg police.
Eyewitnesses told the police that Sohail was playing outside his house when he suddenly ran to cross the street and directly came into the path of an oncoming truck. The truck could not stop in time and Sohail’s head was crushed underneath its wheels. He was rushed to Nair Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.
Meanwhile, the truck was surrounded by angry slum dwellers who tried to force the driver out. However,
a team of policemen reached the spot in the nick of time and dispersed the mob.
The driver, identified as Prakash Khadse (40), was taken to the hospital and subjected to medical tests, after which he was placed under arrest.
Khadse was not found to be drunk at the time of the incident and has been charged with causing death due to rash and negligent driving, the police said.
