50-year-old found dead inside flat
A 50-year-old former stockbroker was found dead at his residence in Borivali (west) on Tuesday night, the police said.
The police is on the lookout for the unknown accused, who has also decamped with a metal statue of a God worth `15,000 and part of a small temple made from the same metal.
Interestingly, the accused has not touched any other valuables. The statue and the temple were gold plated and the accused may have assumed that they were stealing real gold, the police said.
However, the statue is said to be of great religious value, a family member said.
The victim Vijay Kantilal Vora lived with his wife Pallavi (47) at Adeshwar Apartment situated on the Mandapeshwar Road.
Vora was unemployed for the past five years. He is said to be famous in the community for his religious work. The death took place somewhere between 4.30 pm and 8 pm when Vora’s wife Pallavi was at a nearby Jain temple. Pallavi has been preaching for the past decade and as usual had left home at 10 am.
When Pallavi returned at 8 pm, she saw Vora lying unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital, but was declared dead on admission. The cause of death is unknown and there are no major external injuries. The police also suspects that he could have suffered a heart attack.
The Borivali police also suspects that the accused were known to Vora as he allowed them to come in.

Mumbai, April 3
Customs officials at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Inter-national Airport caught a 22-year-old Palestinian national with around 10 kg of gold worth `3.5 crore early on Wednesday morning. The accused was trying to pass through the green channel when he was apprehended by officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs.
Mohammed Alshar Rana (22), a student in Palestine, had landed in a Gulf Air flight from Bahrain at around 5.15 am on Wednesday.
After clearing immigrations, he proceeded to the customs clearance, where he was caught. “The green channel is only for international passengers, who don’t have to declare anything. We felt he was acting suspicious, when he was asked to step aside,” said a customs officer.
A team led by assistant commissioner Sameer Wankhede later frisked him and found 10 bars of 1 kg gold concealed in hidden pockets of his trousers. There were also two biscuits of 250 grams each in the front pockets. The entire contraband totally weighed 10.5 kg. Rana was detained for questioning and placed under arrest later in the day. Various sections of the Indian Customs Act have been applied against him. He confessed to attempting to smuggle the contraband and also said his handlers promised him USD $500.
