6 held for stealing 400-year-old idol
The Raigad police has solved the 400-year-old Suvarnaganesh temple robbery in Dive Agar with the arrest of six persons from Ahmednagar over the last three days.
According to the Raigad police, the arrests were made in collaboration with the Ahmednagar police in the Kolgaon area of Ahmednagar. While four of the six took part in the planning and execution of the actual robbery, the remaining two are jewellers known to the accused, the police said.
The accused have been identified as Vijay Kale, Kailas Bhosale, Satish Kale, Khairabai Bhosale, Anand Raimukar and Ajit Dahale.
“Khairabai is Kailas’ mother, while Vijay and Satish are also related to him. They belong to the Phase Pardhi tribe. Raimukar and Dahale are jewellers,” said Ashwini Sanap, sub-divisional police officer, Raigad.
The police first arrested Kailas and Satish from Kolgaon after receiving a tip off; their interrogation led to the subsequent arrests.
“We are now trying to recover the idol of Lord Ganesh and its adornments that were stolen during the heist,” Ms Sanap added.
On March 24, Kailas and Satish entered the historically significant temple in Dive Agar by uprooting some tiles in the roof and jumping inside. They then attacked two guards, one of whom later died during treatment.
