6 ‘illegal immigrants’ held
The Kharghar police in Navi Mumbai has arrested six persons, suspected to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, for allegedly attacking two policemen early on Monday. The policemen from Mumbai police Special Branch had gone to arrest the suspected illegal Bangladesh nationals at Kharghar’s Owe village when a mob of around 15 people assaulted them.
The police has arrested Alamgiri Hussain (32), Yasim Mulla (19), Akbar Kiramat Shaikh (32), Sahil Shaikh (24), Mohammed Alamuddin Nooral (48) and Suja Khali Shaikh (24). The six, who were earlier detained, were booked late on Monday night for assault, attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and deterring a public servant from discharging his duty under the IPC. The police had earlier filed a case against unknown persons. They were produced in court and remanded to police custody till February 8. Police inspector Ashok Satpute said, “We have confirmed their Bangladeshi identity and that they were living here without valid documents.” PSI Subhash Bandekar and constable Sharad Hande were attacked by the accused, which caused injuries to Mr Bandekar’s arms and Mr Hande’s head and neck. The assailants had reportedly used iron rods.
and sharp weapons during the attack. Police said the purpose behind the attack was retaliation against the recent crackdown against illegal immigrants who have been alleged to be involved in criminal activities. The police had earlier raided a slum in Mankhurd and arrested one Shamshed, who told cops about more such persons living at Kharghar.
The policemen, who were attached to the ‘I’ Division of the Special Branch proceeded to Navi Mumbai, along with a few women constables. The police will now question the accused and ascertain if any of them were involved in recent criminal activities, including robberies in the Navi Mumbai area.
