70-yr-old biker run over, driver held
A 70-year-old man, riding without a helmet, died of grievous head injuries after a speeding truck rammed into his scooter at a curve on the Saki Naka junction in Andheri (east) on Wednesday night, the police said. The driver abandoned the truck and escaped from the spot, fearing he would be beaten up. He was later traced and arrested.
According to the Saki Naka police, the incident took place at around 10.30 pm on the Saki Naka junction. “The deceased, Sanjeev Hegde, is a resident of Marol. He was a priest by profession, and was on his way home after completing a ceremony in Powai,” said the investigating official, police sub-inspector Sandeep Chavan of the Saki Naka police station.
Hegde was taking a turn when the truck hit him from the rear. Due to the impact, Hegde was thrown off his scooter and succumbed to grievous injuries to his head.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on admission. The truck driver was arrested .
On Thursday morning, the police traced the 30-year-old truck driver, Mukeed Latif Khan, who lives in a garage on the LBS Marg in Kurla, after the truck’s owner tipped-off the police about his whereabouts. Khan has been booked under Sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death due to negligence) and 134 A and B of the Motor Vehicles Act for escaping from the spot without rendering help to Hegde.
“Khan was not driving under the influence of alcohol. He was produced before a magistrate’s court and released on bail,” said an official.
However, the Saki Naka police has seized the truck and sent it to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to check if any technical error led to the accident. They have also seized the papers of the vehicle from the owner.
