90,000 puris feed 18,000 at venue
Even though the police maintained that there was a low turnout, the organisers claimed to have fed at least 18,000 people on the first day. They said that 90,000 puris and 500 kg of potatoes were used to feed the supporters.
“Anna Ki Rasoi” was managed by Jan Seva Sansthan, Rohtak, Haryana, and Shri Giriraj Seva Samiti, from Surat. “On Tuesday till midnight, we served free meals to around 18,000 supporters. We have enough provisions to serve over a lakh supporters,” said volunteer Ram Swaroopji Maharaj.
According to Chaitanya Maharaj, 20 sacks of 25 kg potatoes were used to make the vegetable served to the supporters. “Around five puris were served to each person which means 90,000 puris were served to the supporters. Dal and rice were also given in the meal,” said another volunteer. According to Ram Swaroopji, they were expecting to feed even more supporters on Wednesday. “The police is making claims that there was a low turnout but we know the number of people we fed from the plates that have been used. Volunteers from the local gurdwara and other places also contributed material like atta and dal,” he said.
Food was served from three counters. However, by evening after Anna called off the fast, the establishment started packing up.
When asked how much food was wasted because of the sudden call off, a volunteer said, “Nothing will be wasted. We have stopped cooking more but whatever has been already cooked will be served to the supporters who are still present at the venue.”
