Aadhar camps to shift priority
People from the middle and lower middle class will now get priority for getting the Unique Identification Card (UID), also called the Aadhar Card. To increase their participation in this process, the state government has decided to discontinue the UID enrollment centres in private premises and increase them in government offices and schools.
The UID card will ensure that the citizens get access to all the schemes of the government and local bodies.
According to civic officials, it has been observed that camps in private societies were not getting enough response, as people were reluctant to go there to register for UID cards. Holding these centres in government offices will ensure that the entire machinery can focus on enrolling the middle and lower middle class people.
“People from these strata need the UID cards most, as they are the direct beneficiaries of various government sch-emes. Hence, it has been decided to give them priority for this scheme. Accordingly, no UID cam-ps will be held in private premises anymore,” said a senior civic official.
Earlier, the BMC had allowed camps in housing societies, offices, so that people residing or working there can be enrolled. Currently there are 145 BMC centres. The civic body plans to increase the number of centres to 470.
Civic sources said that the UID card will be needed for various government schemes like cylinder subsidy, disbursement of provident fund, distribution of free educational items for civic school students.
According to the civic officials, so far around 68 per cent of Mumbai’s total population has enrolled for UID cards.
