‘Accepted 11 out of 13 demands’
In the wake of teachers’ strike, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday informed the court that it has fulfilled about eleven out of 13 demands of the teachers. However, the teachers have stated that they are firm on their demands and are not ready for compromises.
A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Anoop Mohta was hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad, seeking action against the teachers and associations who were on strike stating that it affected the assessment of papers. In a previous hearing, the Bombay high court had asked Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (MFUCTO) and the state government to conduct a meeting and “arrive at an amicable settlement”. The court had further asked the state to give a compliance report on April 30.
Pursuant to the order, the teachers committee MFUCTO and the state met on April 25 to discuss the issues, and arrive at a solution. The teachers had raised several issues during the meeting.
They had demanded for the release of 80 per cent share of the Sixth Pay Commission arrears for the period between January 2006 and 2010, along with several others. The main demand of the teachers was the regularisation of services of those teachers,
appointed between September 19, 1991 and April 3, 2000, who had not cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET).
The state informed the court on Tuesday that it had accepted most of the demands of the teachers. The court adjourned the matter to Wednesday for further hearing.
