Adarsh report to be submitted
After nine extensions, the Adarsh judicial commission, constituted to investigate the Adarsh Society scam, is likely to submit its final report this week. If the report is submitted this week, it could be tabled before the state Legislature, which is in session till April 18.
Three months after the scam came to light, in January 2011 the state government set up a two-member commission to probe the Adarsh scam, and comprises retired Justice J.A. Patil and former chief secretary of state P. Subramanium.
The commission has taken nearly 28 months to examine over 40 witnesses, mostly bureaucrats and politicians, including former CM Ashok Chavan, late Vilasrao Deshmukh and Union minister Sushilkumar Shinde. The final report is expected to comment on the alleged roles of all these former chief ministers of the state.
“The final report is likely to be submitted this week. The commission has not been given any deadline by the government. Efforts are on to complete the report and submit it this week,” an official related to the commission said, on condition of anonymity.
The commission had last year submitted an interim report, in favour of the state government.

A 22-year-old woman, who set herself on fire in a slum area of Goregaon (east) late night on Saturday after a fight with her husband’s family, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday. Five members of the family have been arrested for demanding dowry and abetting her suicide.
According to the Vanrai police, the incident took place at around 10 pm in the Swatantra Chawl along the Mulund Link Road. The deceased, Manju Gupta, had married Manoj Gupta in April 2012. The couple was childless. According to Manju’s family members, her husband’s family was harassing her for dowry.
Troubled by the constant taunts and abuses, Manju went to the loft of their house, poured kerosene and set herself on fire. When the other family members saw her engulfed in flames, they doused the fire and rushed her to Bhagwati Hospital. Manju suffered over 90 per cent burns and succumbed early on Sunday morning.
