AG offers to resign following controversy
Advocate general of state Darius Khambatta on Friday offered to resign over the controversy on his affidavit filed in the Bombay high court.
Mr Khambatta is believed to have said that he was misguided by state officials. However, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan turned down the offer.
In response to a petition filed by an NGO in the HC, Mr Khambatta, at the government’s behest, had said in his affidavit that the directives of the governor regarding allocation of funds are not binding on the state government.
This has led to a controversy as the Opposition parties raised the issue in the state Assembly and stalled proceedings of the House. Chairman of the legislative council Shivajrao Deshmukh also called an all-party meeting where according to well-placed sources, Mr Khambatta accepted his mistake and offered to resign. “I do not discuss each and every point with the government. Generally in any case, the concerned government officials help me, but the same was not followed here. I argued for three consecutive days, but none of the officials corrected me,” Mr Khambatta said. The advocate general then offered to resign, but the CM, who was also present, quickly intervened and said that he need not resign.
