Alert cops save mom, child from drowning
Two alert constables saved the lives of a mother-daughter duo from Navi Mumbai, who fell into the Arabian Sea at the Gateway of India on Tuesday evening.
According to the Colaba police, the incident occurred at around 6 pm on Tuesday. Koparkhairane resident Shweta Sharma (29) had come to the Gateway of India with her daughter Anushka (3) and both were sitting on the ledge near the water when they fell.
“Anushka was sitting on Shweta’s lap, who seems to have lost balance and fallen, taking her daughter with her. They were seen falling by others who had come to the tourist spot to spend the evening, and an alarm was raised,” said an officer with the Colaba police.
Constables Santosh Yadav and Deepak Patil, who were at the time patrolling the area as part of their duties, rushed to the ledge on hearing the outcry. Seeing Shweta and Anushka struggling for life, they jumped into the water. At the same time, two fishermen also jumped inside, and between them, the four men managed to save both the victims.
Shweta and Anushka were rushed to the JJ Hospital for treatment, and they are now said to be out of danger. Their family was informed about the incident, and Shweta’s husband rushed to the hospital from Koparkhairane.

Mumbai, June 13
Crime branch officers arrested two Bihar natives and recovered 13 guns from them in two different seizures early on Tuesday morning. One of the accused had stuffed the weapons in a rice bag and wrapped them in carbon paper to evade scanners at railway stations.
Based on a tip-off, a team of the crime branch’s Unit 8 arrested Santosh Kumar Jaiswal (34), from the Vile Parle area at around 7 am on Tuesday. “We seized seven firearms and 13 live cartridges from him. He had concealed the weapons in rice bags and wrapped them in carbon papers to avoid detection in X-ray machines at railway stations,” said Niket Kaushik, additional commissioner.
At around 4.30 am on Tuesday, the Dahisar unit of the crime branch arrested Appusingh Brijmoh-ansingh (20), near Borivali railway station. “We seized six country-made firearms and four live cartridges from him,” said deputy commissioner Ambadas Pote. “We believe that the weapons were ordered by some local gangs who were short of ammunition. We have identified them and will soon take action,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police, crime.
